Outline for SAM speech for Nanjing conference (10 minutes)
Brief introduction to the establishment of SAM
Current curatorial direction of SAM
SAM is focused on presenting contemporary art from Southeast Asia. Its point of reference will be Singapore in 1988, when The Artists Village led by Tang Da Wu was formed and Trimurti exhibition by Chandrasekaran S., Goh Ee Choo and Salleh Japar took place.
SAM’s acquisitions augment its exhibition programmes which are centered on the research and presentation of contemporary art from Southeast Asia. To provide deeper cultural context to its Southeast Asian collection, it also acquires art from India and China, particularly in areas such as photography and new media.
SAM will present solo exhibitions of contemporary artists from Singapore and Southeast Asia. It has just presented mid-career retrospectives of artists FX Harsono (Indonesia) and Vincent Leow (Singapore). In plans are exhibitions by Amanda Heng, Suzann Victor and Lee Wen (Singapore) and Natee Utarit and Manit Sriwanichpoom (Thailand).
SAM is also active in public programmes, education and community engagement. This is done through hosting the bi-annual APB Signature Art Prize and Asian Contemporary Art Prize; it recently presented Children’s Seasons: Art Garden, a contemporary art exhibition dedicated to children and is a partner in various community based projects such as the Yellow Ribbon Project by Singapore Prisons.
SAM’s SJI venue will undergo renovations in 2013 to refurbish and expand its exhibition space. In plans are double volume exhibition floors as well as dedicated permanent exhibition galleries featuring iconic pieces of Southeast Asian contemporary art drawn from its collection.
Conclusion
In March 2011, SAM will be presenting the third instalment of Singapore Biennale. This time, its Artistic Director, Singaporean artist Matthew Ngui helms with the support of curators Russel Storer and Trevor Smith. The biennale will feature over forty international artists working on the premise of Open House. This is the first time that SAM will be presenting Singapore Biennale.SAM will continue to collaborate, develop and present innovative and immersive programmes with both emerging and established contemporary artists from around Southeast Asia through various means such as the commissioning of site and purpose specific projects and its inaugural artist residency programme (to be launched in 2012).
