历史是新加坡国家美术馆的关键，因为该馆的主要任务就是介绍新加坡和东南亚艺术的历史，即使当代和现代的艺术，也纳入历史的时间顺序中呈现。美术馆面临的最大挑战是促进艺术史学术研究，因为在东南亚地区，还缺乏艺术分析，尤其是亚洲内部的对比研究。
历史介绍必需进一步从史学角度进行研究，让各种团体参与到研究和鉴赏中来，包括艺术家，学者，学校，大学和社区。国家美术馆将继续设立国际奖学金，鼓励东南亚艺术史、亚洲和世界艺术史的研究。奖学金近年来已取得重要发展。
Abstract of Presentation：
History is key to the National Art Gallery as its primary task of presenting Singapore and Southeast Asian art is predicated on a historical perspective, on a chronology, and even for the contemporary art works they are presented as a continuum or in dialogue or counterpoint to art history. The greatest challenge of the National Art Gallery is that of facilitating art historical scholarship especially in view of the relative lack of rich analyses within Southeast Asia and also in intra Asian comparative studies.
The historical presentation must further propose historiographical perspectives and to be able to facilitate research work by the various parties such as artists, scholars, schools, universities, as well as learning and appreciation by the community at large. The National Art Gallery will contribute to the international scholarship on Southeast Asian art history and related areas such as Asian Art History and World Art History, which are areas of scholarship that have seen significant development in the recent years.
